About

Eric Hand

My two passions are comics and teaching.

For the past 23 years I’ve been involved in education as a teacher and a staff developer for the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. Being a teacher taught me patience, flexibility, and the importance of developing mutually respectful relationships with students. My time as a staff developer doubled, tripled, quadrupled(!) my knowledge of teaching methods, the skills and strategies of literacy, and best practices in public speaking.

I’ve been a comic book reader for as long as I can remember. I’ve seen the comic book medium move from the newsstand to the comic book shop and begin to gain more popularity and respectability as graphic novels become more pervasive in bookstores, libraries, and schools across the nation.

About 5 years ago, my two passions combined. I began to focus on studying the intersection of comics and teaching…and I’ve never looked back since. My book, Graphic Novels: Writing in Pictures and Words, co-authored with Hareem Atif Khan is the culmination of this work.

Now I want to share my expertise and continued growth through “Written by Hand.”
